This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge necessary to administer restricted analgesics for pain management within a medically supervised first responder organisation. It encompasses recognising the need for pain relief, handling, preparing, and administering restricted pain relief options like analgesics and aspirin following medically approved protocols, conducting casualty handovers, and fulfilling requirements for the use of analgesics.
The unit is relevant for individuals from emergency services, volunteer groups, or organisations that offer medically supervised first aid services. There may be licensing regulations concerning the storage and administration of certain medications.
This course is designed to develop your skills and knowledge and most importantly, confidence, to administer restricted analgesic to provide pain management as part of a medically supervised first responder organisation.
It includes identifying the need for analgesia, accessing, preparing and administering restricted pain relief such as analgesics and aspirin according to medically endorsed protocols, performing casualty handovers and completing analgesic use requirements.
Providing effective pain management requires both theoretical learning and hands-on training. This is especially true regarding the storage, access, preparation, and administration of restricted analgesic drugs. Training is most beneficial when undertaken prior to encountering real-life situations.
Licensing requirements for storing and administering drugs may vary based on the organisation, type of drug, and state/territory laws.
Penthrox Methoxyflurane, commonly known as the green whistle, is a pain relief device utilised by medical professionals, defence forces, ambulance paramedics, sports clubs, surf lifesavers, first responders, and medics for emergency pain management.
It is popular in remote first aid locations like mine sites and the mining sector as a simple non-addictive and easy to administer pain management option, making it an excellent choice for situations where a fast-acting and uncomplicated method of pain relief is required.

It is a requirement of those who attend this training to hold a current HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certificate which must be provided prior to attendance.

Applicants are required to demonstrate good language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills. Our courses utilise plain English, videos, photographs, and questioning to maximise learner comprehension and skill development necessary for their job role.

All students must present identification at the training course. A Photo ID, such as a Driver’s Licence or Passport, is the minimum requirement, along with 100 points of identification.

The course is a combined delivery structure and comprises a pre-course online component followed by our half day (5 hour) in-class practical course.
The course is presented via a combination of structured tutorials, workshops, case studies, video, practical assignments and workplace application. Individual and group work activities and assessment activities are conducted throughout the course.
All trainers and assessors are recognised industry experts, holding relevant experience and training qualifications. They include security industry specialists, former serving police officers, military personnel and emergency response and medical specialists.
