What Is HSR Training?
HSR training is designed to equip elected representatives with the knowledge and skills to effectively perform their role under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act 2020 (WA).
In WA, the training typically involves:
- A 5-day initial training course delivered by a WorkSafe WA-approved provider.
- An optional 1-day refresher course, available annually
The training covers topics such as understanding WHS legislation, identifying hazards, conducting risk assessments, and issuing Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs).
Is HSR Training Mandatory in WA?
Technically, HSR training is not mandatory by law if you simply hold the title. However, if you want to fully exercise the powers and functions of a HSR, such as issuing Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) or directing unsafe work to stop, completing the 5-day accredited training is required.
If an elected HSR requests training, the employer or Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) must allow them to attend an approved training course. They must also pay the training course, other reasonable costs, and the HSR’s usual rate of pay while they attend the course. This obligation is clearly outlined in the WHS Act 2020 (WA).
