Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for Australian Defence Force (ADF) Members

Transform Your Military Expertise into Civilian Success

Transitioning from military service to civilian employment can be both exciting and challenging. The skills you’ve developed in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) are extensive, unique, and incredibly valuable, but they don’t always translate easily into terms the civilian workforce understands. That’s where Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) comes in.

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that acknowledges the skills, knowledge, and experience you’ve gained throughout your ADF career. Through RPL, your military training and real-world experience can be formally converted into Nationally Recognised Qualifications that are respected and understood across civilian industries. This means you don’t have to sit in a classroom to learn what you already know—your expertise speaks for itself.

Why Choose RPL?

Military personnel often develop exceptional skills in areas such as security, risk management, work health and safety, leadership, emergency response, and business management. However, the language and criteria used in the civilian sector differ significantly. RPL bridges this gap, making your military service comprehensible and relevant to potential employers. With qualifications earned through RPL, you’ll be well-positioned to compete in the civilian job market.

Our Seamless RPL Process

At Core Training Group, a veteran-owned Registered Training Organisation (RTO), we’ve been assisting ADF members and veterans gain nationally recognised qualifications through RPL for over a decade. Our team, which includes experienced ex-ADF RPL assessors, makes the process straightforward and seamless:

1. Initial Consultation and Document Submission

We’ll begin by understanding your background and collecting relevant documents, such as:

  • HR employment and service records
  • Training and qualification certificates
  • Performance appraisals or reports from supervisors
  • Rank certificates, position descriptions, and employment contracts
  • Documentation of completed projects, reports, or tasks

2. Assessment and Evaluation

Our assessors will map your military experience and skills against the requirements of civilian qualifications. The evaluation outcomes will fall into one of three categories:

  • Full RPL Granted: If your evidence meets all requirements, we’ll issue your qualification upon enrolment and payment of the RPL fee.
  • Partial RPL: If there are minor gaps, we’ll provide assessments to bridge these. Once completed, your qualification will be awarded.
  • Recommendation to Complete a Full Course: In some cases, attending a full course may be necessary, involving enrolment, course attendance, and assessment.

3. Tailored Recommendations and Support

Our team will guide you through any additional training or assessments required. We also assist in mapping out career pathways, using a combination of RPL, online learning, and in-person courses.
