Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry Course

This unit of competency specifies the mandatory work health and safety training required prior to undertaking construction work. The unit requires the person to demonstrate personal awareness and knowledge of health and safety legislative requirements in order to work safely and prevent injury or harm to self and others. It covers identifying and orally reporting common construction hazards, understanding basic risk control measures, and identifying procedures for responding to potential incidents and emergencies. It also covers correctly selecting and fitting common personal protective equipment (PPE) used for construction work.

This unit meets the general construction induction training requirements of:

• Part 1.1 Definitions and Part 6.5 of the Model Work Health and Safety Regulations;
• Division 11 of Part 3 of the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996 for Western Australia; and
• Division 3 of Part 5.1 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2007 for Victoria.

It is expected that site-specific induction training will be conducted prior to conducting construction work.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit. Relevant work health and safety state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm jurisdictional requirements.

The intended participants for this unit of competency (UOC) are individuals aiming to join the security industry or those currently working in the security industry who need to perform security duties on construction sites, either locally or on remote mining, oil and gas sites.

This unit of competency outlines the essential work health and safety training necessary prior to undertaking construction work.

The unit demands the person to demonstrate personal awareness and comprehension of health and safety legislative requirements to ensure safe conduct and prevent injury or harm to oneself and others.

It encompasses the identification and verbal reporting of common construction hazards, understanding basic risk control measures, and identifying procedures for responding to potential incidents and emergencies. It also covers correctly selecting and fitting common personal protective equipment (PPE) used for construction work.

• Recognise and understand roles, responsibilities and rights of duty holders
• Understand the methods of OHS communication and reporting processes
• Implement risk management principles
• Detect common hazards and control measures
• Interpret and apply safety information and documentation
• Use safe work practices
• Respond appropriately to OHS incident
• A person carrying out construction work, including site managers, supervisors, surveyors, labourers and trades persons
• People who access operational construction zones unaccompanied or not directly supervised by an inducted person

The target participants for this Unit of Competency (UoC) include individuals preparing for a career in the security industry or those already working in the security industry who need to perform security duties on construction sites, either locally or on remote mining, oil and gas sites.

This also applies to workers who frequently visit active construction areas as part of their job.

Individuals found on a construction site without a valid Construction Induction card face substantial fines imposed by SafeWork WA, the governmental agency tasked with managing work health and safety regulations, as well as licensing and registration in Western Australia.

• Must reside in and possess a residential address in Western Australia.
• Students must provide evidence of WA residence such as WA Drivers Licence or rental agreement or utility bill which shows the name of the student and their address.
• Applicants must demonstrate good language, literacy and numeracy required at this level. A LLN assessment may be conducted at pre-enrolment to assess whether the applicant requires LLN support for this training
• Participants may choose to undertake an LLN assessment with one of our qualified assessors prior to committing to their enrolment in this qualification
• Basic to intermediate computer skills are also required for entry into this qualification.

USI Number Requirements:

The course is delivered via a combination of structured tutorials, workshops, case studies, video, practical assignments and workplace application. Individual and group work activities and assessment activities are conducted throughout the course.

The trainers and assessors responsible for delivering our course are accredited experts in their respective fields. They hold the requisite qualification(s) to deliver this course and meet the relevant professional experience requirements in line with the 2025 Standards Credential Policy.
