Baton, Handcuff & OC Spray Course in Perth

Upon completing the Baton, Handcuff & OC Spray Course, our aim is to ensure that you are proficient in confidently presenting and controlling a subject using a baton, applying handcuffs, and deploying OC spray when necessary. Our training aligns with the standards required for employment with Wilson Security on TransPerth buses.

This course is essential for licensed security officers seeking to progress their careers in the security sector. Relevant job roles include:

• Transit Officer
• Cash-In-Transit Officer

Additionally, the course equips you with the skills to present a baton or spray for self-defence and the protection of others, to direct individuals, and to apply handcuffs in compliance with legal requirements.

Under the Security and Related Activities (Control) Act 1996, section 26, you can only be endorsed to carry a baton. While there is no specific endorsement for carrying handcuffs or OC spray, in Western Australia, it is mandatory for a security officer who carries a baton, handcuffs, or OC spray as part of their job to possess current certification and authorisation from their employer. It is important to note that crowd controllers are not permitted to carry a baton.

The course is conducted face-to-face, requiring a minimum of 2 days to cover all four units, in order to fulfil the requirements of Wilson Security Public Transport Authority. The Baton, Handcuff & OC Spray course is structured into 1 day dedicated to baton training, another day for restraints and handcuffs, and a half-day for OC spray training. Assessment scenarios are grouped together to accomplish this schedule.

• All four units (CPPSEC3110, CPPSEC3111, CPPSEC3121 and CPPSEC3126): $350
• Baton and cuffs (CPPSEC3110, CPPSEC3111 and CPPSEC3121): $300
• CPPSEC3110 Control persons using batons only: $150
• CPPSEC3111 Restrain persons using handcuffs only: $100
• CPPSEC3121 Control persons using empty hand techniques:  $100
• CPPSEC3126 Defend persons using spray only: $100

The Baton, Handcuff & OC Spray course is designed to enhance participants’ understanding of operational security services, particularly in high-risk asset protection scenarios. The course includes:

• Learning the correct procedures for drawing and holding batons, along with adopting the right stance and tactical positioning.
• Utilising negotiation techniques to de-escalate conflicts, and to direct and restrain individuals.
• Employing a baton for defensive strikes on specific body areas, while avoiding vital regions and monitoring the subject’s wellbeing.
• Reviewing and assessing the response’s effectiveness to identify areas for improvement.
• Identifying when to use handcuffs, ensuring personal safety including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintaining a safe defensive distance while observing the subject.
• Applying handcuffs with appropriate pressure, ensuring they are locked and can be unlocked, while minimising physical contact and reducing any potential humiliation or indignity to the subject.
• Communicating effectively to give directions and warnings, and removing handcuffs in a way that maintains control over the subject.
• Adhering to policies, procedures, legal rights and responsibilities, including workplace health and safety (WHS) considerations.
• Determining when to use OC spray based on risk and threat assessment, confirming personal safety needs including PPE, and considering options for withdrawal.
• Using negotiation skills to defuse conflict and providing verbal warnings before using spray.
• Discharging spray in a controlled manner, adjusting to changing circumstances to protect self and others, and avoiding causing undue harm to the subject.
• Monitoring the subject’s wellbeing and providing necessary assistance as required.

• Must live in and have a Western Australian residential address.
• Applicants must exhibit adequate language, literacy, and numeracy skills for this level. A Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment may be conducted before enrolment to determine if the applicant needs LLN support for this training.
• Participants have the option to undergo an LLN assessment with one of our qualified assessors before finalising their enrolment in this qualification.
• Have completed CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations
• It is expected that participants have a solid background in the Security Industry, with a minimum of one (1) year of experience, as this course is focused on the use of force and conducting arrests.
• 100 points of identification

Recognition of Prior Learning is offered to individuals who have substantial experience in security, policing, corrections, military, and related fields, and can provide evidence of course completion in these job roles.

The assessment process involves a comprehensive portfolio of evidence, a workbook, questions, and written scenarios to support your claim for RPL. Detailed information about the RPL process will be provided before enrolment by one of our training assessors. During this process, you and your Impact assessor will determine if there is a need for further training. Should additional training be required, you may opt to complete individual units, which may incur additional fees.

Deposits are non-refundable for students who fail to attend classes or decide after booking that they no longer wish to participate. Alterations to class schedules are permitted, provided they are not made within 48 hours of the class start time.
